NIEUWORANJE

Designed by Robbie de Villiers, NieuwOranje is an art deco and novelty font family. This typeface has two styles and was published by Wilton Foundry.

NieuwOranje, (New Orange) the font is named after New York City. A little background: In 1673 during the Third Anglo-Dutch War, a sizeable Dutch fleet led by Admiral Cornelis Evertsen the Youngest, AKA Keesje de Duivel (“Little Cornelis the Devil”), turned up in New York harbor, demanding the city be surrendered to it. The acting English commander surrendered without resistance. New York was then renamed Nieuw Oranje (New Orange) in honor of the Prince Willem of Orange. Ironically Prince Willem married his cousin Mary, which later gave him a claim to the English crown where he became King William III of England.

Shaped by the Dutch respect for freedom of conscience, Nieuw Oranje boldly captures the essence of the city that thrives on creativity and cultural diversity. It reflects the vibrant tapestry of contemporary New York.

Nieuw Oranje’s bold and distinctive style is the ideal headline choice for fashion, architecture, theatre, film, music, and cuisine.
