Heisei Kaku Gothic was one of the first typeface families developed by a group of type foundries formed by the Japanese Standards Association (JSA). In 1988, a font development project was started by the Font Development and Promotion Center (FDPC), which was formed as an affiliate of the JSA. A type design competition was held for Gothic typefaces and a design proposed by Nippon Typewriter Co., Ltd. (which later became Canon N.T.C., Inc.) was elected. Heisei Kaku Gothic is a modern Gothic, or sans-serif, design whose kanji glyphs have simple stroke shapes. Still, its hiragana and katakana characters have subtly curved strokes, offering a good balance between simplified and traditional letterform construction. The standard weight W5 is designed for use with Heisei Mincho W3.

Heisei Maru Gothic was the second typeface family developed by a group of type foundries formed by the Japanese Standards Association. The development project began in 1989, when the Font Development and Promotion Center, an affiliate of the JSA, elected Sha-Ken Co., Ltd. to be the designer. Heisei Maru Gothic is a traditional round gothic typeface with relatively larger counter-spaces, which gives it a kind of openness and brightness. Unnecessary subtle stroke features are avoided to optimize printing on low-resolution output devices. Two weights are available.

Heisei Mincho was one of the first typeface families developed by a group of type foundries formed by the Japanese Standards Association (JSA). In 1988, a font development project was started by the Font Development and Promotion Center (FDPC), which was formed as an affiliate of the JSA. A type design competition was held for Mincho typefaces and design proposed by Ryobi Imagix Co. was elected. Heisei Mincho is a modern Mincho design with relatively larger counter-spaces and simplified strokes composed of many straight lines. For better reproduction on low-resolution output devices, its horizontal stroke width is set heavier than other standard Mincho typefaces. Lighter weights of Heisei Mincho such as W3 are suitable for printing books and office documents.
