Caslon 540

Caslon 540 is a serif font family. This typeface has two styles and was published by ParaType.

Caslon 540 is the Bitstream version of Caslon 540, originally designed by the American Type Founders in 1902. This typeface is based on William Caslon I’s first English Old Style typefaces from 1725. Caslon drew inspiration from late 17th-century Dutch types, but his artistic skills allowed him to enhance those models, introducing a variety of forms and subtle details.

The strokes in Caslon 540 are somewhat heavier than in earlier Old Style fonts, with thicker and slightly stubby serifs. The italic letters have an uneven slope, adding character to the typeface. Text set in Caslon 540 remains legible and aesthetically appealing. Even today, Caslon is a favorite font among English printers for setting classical literature.

The Cyrillic version of Caslon 540 was developed for Paratype in 2002 by Isay Slutsker and Manvel Shmavonyan.

Caslon 540 main characteristics:
- 2 styles in total
- 580+ glyphs in each style
- 12 OpenType features
- Extended Latin and Cyrillic support
